Job 9

I am not a stargazing person. Perhaps I am more of a practical person. But it seems beneficial to gaze at the skies and stars. It makes me humble and wise. When I look at the skies, I am reminded of how minute I am in the universe. And this observation in turn teaches me my humble existence. Even compared to the size of our planet, I am nothing more than a tiny particle. But when I compare myself to the universe, I am less than invisible dust. Astronomers and physicists say the universe is expanding faster than light. Then, my relative size becomes smaller and smaller as the universe expands. It is not an exaggeration to call myself nothing in this sense. But above all, we don’t even exactly know why and how the universe expands. Scientists offer theories, but eventually, the question of the expansion of the universe remains a mystery.

Without studying astronomy or physics, Job already realized many natural phenomena are inaccessible to human intelligence. But, through his intuition, he saw the Lord is behind all these immense powers and complexities in the universe.

Job was innocent in his words and deeds but had to face unspeakable disasters and tragedies. He might be able to demand justice from the Lord. But Job trusted the Lord much more than his innocence. Job believed that the Lord who governs all universe and regulates all changes of heaven and earth must have had a better reason for his calamities, although he could not even speculate why. Job shows an example of absolute humility. Although he was without sins, he didn’t ask for justice. Instead, he begged for God’s mercy.

Will I be able to react like Job, when I am swept away with disastrous misfortunes? I pray that the Lord allows me to have humility like that of Job, so that I may remain faithful to the Lord in difficult times of life. When those moments come, may the Lord turn my eyes to the skies, so that I realize what I am – the smallest among all his creations.
