Every year, this country throws a party on the 4th of July with flags, fireworks, and songs of freedom. But I’m no longer willing to ignore that woven into the broad stripes and stars of this celebration is a history of cruelty, erased contributions, sacrifices, and unpaid debts to those who built this country without freedom or safety.
As a Black woman, I know this ain’t our celebration. Yet, while they whitewash history, the present and future call us to reclaim what’s ours: purpose, wholeness, and sovereignty.
