In response to the above queries by Uday, Dr John Watts explained that a pre-operative blood test is a must before undergoing a hair transplant procedure as it screens several health parameters to check if the patient is fit and healthy to undergo a hair transplant.
“We cannot use one-year-old or six-month-old reports. A recent blood test report besides a few other pre-operative tests such as ECG is required before undergoing a hair transplant procedure,” explained Dr John Watts.
1. General well-being: The first important purpose of a blood test is to check the general well-being of the patient.
2. Blood clotting & Bleeding Levels: Secondly, the need for a pre-operative blood test is to check if there is no abnormality in blood clotting and bleeding levels in the patient.
4. Sugar Levels: One more reason why a pre-operative blood test is required is to check the current sugar level. “Sometimes, patients manage to temporarily control their sugar level but it is not enough. If a patient has high sugar levels, it can impact the overall results. Diabetic patients, if their sugar is not controlled, can only manage up to 70–89% growth results post the hair transplant.
5. Lung & Heart Condition: Sometimes tests may be prescribed by the treating doctor to check the patient’s heart and lung condition before undergoing the transplant. ECG test can also be asked by the hair transplant doctor to check if the patient’s heart is healthy and can handle the stress of surgery
6. Haemoglobin/Iron/Thyroid Levels: These levels are also screened before the surgery as they can cause hair loss conditions. “Sometimes, a hair transplant surgery is not required if we can identify the causes of hair loss conditions and take corrective medication and nutrition. Hence, these parameters are important,” informed Dr John Watts.
