#AskDrJohnWatts
In this video session, Hyderabad’s noted dermatologist & trichologist and one of the Best Hair Transplant Surgeons in Hyderabad, Dr John Watts answers a select question on whether a hair transplant procedure can cause cancer. He also addresses a query on the side effects of discontinuing Minoxidil for a few days and whether one can stop its use soon after undergoing PRP therapy. Dr John has performed over 2000+ hair transplant surgeries successfully.
Mithun Devani asks: Sir, I want to know if a hair transplant procedure can cancer. I heard this while watching a YouTube channel. Please explain.
In response to the above queries by Mithun Devani, Dr John Watts explained hair transplant procedure is not something that came up all of a sudden or last year. It is an old technique that was invented more than 80 years ago and over the years, in different phases, it was perfected with advanced techniques and scientific knowledge in countries like Japan and America.
While answering his query, he said that hundreds of people undergo hair transplant procedures every day around the world and so far, the procedure has never been linked to cancer.
“Maybe the said YouTube channel presenter got his facts wrong about hair transplant procedure and its link with cancer, which is not true at all,” explained Dr John Watts, urging Mithun to explain to his friends and relatives that it is only a myth.
Explaining further, he said that a hair transplant procedure is not the only alternative for baldness as those who do not intend to undergo surgery can use other options such as using hair fibre to cover gaps on the scalp or using a hair patch instead if one is not interested in a hair transplant.
However, he strongly advised people not to spread myths and rumours about hair transplant procedures.
Rohit asks: Sir, I want to know if I undergo PRP therapy, is it safe to use Minoxidil on the same day? I was advised by my hair clinic not to use Minoxidil for three days after PRP. However, you have mentioned in your previous videos that one should never stop using Minoxidil even for 2–3 days as it may impact the hair growth results. Please explain this contradiction.
In response to the above queries and concerns raised by Rohit, Dr John Watts explained that what he said about the impact of skipping Minoxidil for 2–3 days at a stretch is true as it may affect hair growth.
While answering the query raised by him, he said that his hair clinic’s advice on not using Minoxidil for three days is also correct.
“Usually, PRP therapy involves injecting growth serum on the scalp and it also involves multiple small injuries on the scalp. The scalp condition remains tender at this time and often serum oozes out. Hence, stopping Minoxidil briefly after PRP therapy is advisable. In such a scenario, skipping Minoxidil will not impact hair growth,” he explained.
However, he said that if one skips Minoxidil during normal conditions, it may affect the hair growth results.
