Different questions related to baldness, hair grafts, hair loss, hair transplant procedures and medical treatments for hair loss are being raised by patients now and then, including the followers of Dr John Watts, who keep flooding his series of hugely popular educational videos on his popular YouTube channel with queries related to different hair issues.
In this video session, Hyderabad’s noted dermatologist & trichologist and one of the Best Hair Transplant Surgeons in Hyderabad, Dr John Watts answers a select question from a patient on whether it is safe for one to opt for an artificial hair styling method or procedure that involves one to change his straightened hair into curly hair? Dr John Watts explains the pros and cons of such an attempt.
So far, Dr John Watts has performed over 2000+ hair transplant surgeries successfully.
Dilip Desaboina asks: Sir, I want to opt for curly hair. I want to know if I can safely adopt this hairstyle without causing any damage. Will this lead to hair fall? Please explain.
In response to the above queries by Dilip Desaboina, Dr John Watts blamed it on the human tendency to long for something that they do not have while undervaluing those things that they already have.
“It is human tendency to take for granted the things we already have and aspire for something that we don’t have in our possession. The same is with craving for curly hair by those who have straightened hair and vice versa,” explained Dr John Watts.
Role of Genetics:
While explaining the concept further, Dr John Watts said that our genes decide the style of hair we will have when we grow up. Even if one makes artificial styling changes, the new style can stay for 5–6 months but new hair growth will ensure that it goes back to the same style.
“Our DNA information is stored in the hair roots. So, if you manage to change your straight hair into curly hair with hot styling iron or rollers using heat, the style will not remain permanent. On the contrary, excessive and repeated exposure to heat may damage the hair cuticle and its core can get damaged. The hair might even break,” warned Dr John Watts.
Advisory:
While answering the specific query raised by Dilip, he said that repeatedly making attempts to change one’s hairstyle through artificial means should never be done regularly but one can try it once or twice a year.
“You should always opt for a hairstyle that suits your hair. Never try to make a permanent change to your natural hairstyle as it may backfire due to heat exposure and excessive use of chemicals in such a procedure. One should never damage one’s hair in the process,” advised Dr John Watts.
