Different questions related to baldness, hair grafts, hair loss, hair transplant procedures and medical treatments for hair loss are being raised by patients now and then, including the followers of Dr John Watts, who keep flooding his series of hugely popular educational videos on his popular YouTube channel with queries related to different hair issues.
In this video session, Hyderabad’s noted dermatologist & trichologist and one of the Best Hair Transplant Surgeons in Hyderabad, Dr John Watts answers a select question from a patient on the exact duration and what upto what age the DHT impact on baldness plays out in a person.
So far, Dr John Watts has performed over 2000+ hair transplant surgeries successfully.
Maruti Neelam asks: Sir, it is true that DHT influence decides our level and extent of baldness. I want to know to what age the DHT impact plays out in a person. Does it stop at a certain age or go on continuously to affect baldness lifelong? Can I say it would stop at the age of 50 years? Will hair fall stop after that age is reached? Please explain.
In response to the above queries by Maruti Neelam, Dr John Watts explained that DHT influence stops on its own in a person after he or she attains a certain age limit but it cannot be accurately and exactly said when that influence would stop.
“Our genes decide the extent of our genetic baldness or DHT-induced baldness. However, we cannot exactly determine at what age the influence will play out. It may happen at the age of 50 years or it may also happen after one reaches the age of 30,” explained Dr John Watts.
Determining Factors for DHT impact halt:
In this educational video, Dr John Watts pointed out that the family history of baldness of a patient remains the crucial determining factor that could give an idea of how long the DHT influence would play out and stop in a person.
Usually, after one reaches the maximum level of baldness that is equal to the level of one’s family history, baldness is supposed to stop further progression in that patient. The DHT influence will act only till that level and no further.
“For example, if your DHT-induced baldness started at the age of 20 years and by 30 years, it reached the crown stage. It may stop progressing further if that is the maximum level of baldness reached in your parents. There won’t be further baldness in such patients and whatever hair is left on the scalp would be completely DHT-free hair that will keep growing till one’s death,” explained Dr John Watts.
In some patients, the DHT influence keeps on showing its impact till one reach 50 years or 60 years or 70 years. The baldness keeps progressing and it does not seem to stop because their parents also faced the same delayed phenomenon of progressive baldness.
Conclusion: There is no fixed age that can be termed as the endpoint for DHT-influenced baldness as it depends upon one’s family history of baldness that they have reached. In case one has already reached the level of baldness visible in their family, their genetic baldness will also stop after that level is reached. It may happen after they reach a certain age.
