J Laxman asks: Sir, I want to know if transplanted hair stays permanent forever. Please explain.
In his response, Dr John Watts tells Laxman in direct answer that they stay permanent like one’s normal growing hair. Explaining the reasons, he said,
“The transplanted hair is donated or extracted from DHT independent zone of the scalp. These hairs are not under the influence of the DHT hormone. Hence, there is no way one can grow bald with such transplanted hair.”
Under the influence of DHT, baldness usually sets on the front and top of the scalp but the back of the scalp is left untouched. Once the hair grafts from the back of the scalp are transplanted on the front or top of the bald scalp, they take on donor dominance and keep growing.
“Even if the hair falls, it would be temporary. The stem cells will keep growing,” explained Dr John Watts.
Explaining further, Dr John said that transplanted hair or one may lose hair in the following conditions.
Every hair follows a normal hair cycle growth ranging from 2 to 8 years that covers three phases: Anagen, Telogen & Catagen. They will fall after reaching the end of the cycle but the stem cells will grow again.
Secondly, newly transplanted hair falls in the first 15-20 days after transplant for the stem cells to imbibe on the scalp.
This would be followed by another temporary hair fall in the 7-8 months after the transplant procedure.
“This apart, one may lose the transplanted hair due to different conditions such as extreme stress or any scalp or skin disorder or health reasons such as crash diet or hospitalizations due to illness such as typhoid or Covid-19. However, such hair loss can be temporary and may regrow once the health improves or starts taking the right nutrition,” informed Dr John.
One more reason that may lead to the loss of transplanted hair is the use of excessive chemical hair dye that may trigger baldness said Dr John while urging the viewers to share the video among their friends for awareness.
