Despite understanding their problems, several hair loss and bald patients are scared to opt for medications and hair restoration treatments as they unnecessarily worry about their side effects.
How serious are these side effects and what are the preventive steps one needs to take in such a scenario? This and other things are explained in this video session by Dr John Watts, a noted dermatologist, trichologist, and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad, provides valuable insights into hair restoration procedures, their types, and the duration of results.
He has performed over 2000+ hair transplant procedures.
Background: The available hair restoration techniques available for patients include:
• medical treatments such as Minoxidil, Biotin therapy, nutrition-based therapy and Finasteride
• mesotherapy treatments such as Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), Stem Cell Therapy, Dermaroller treatment and micro needling procedures.
• Camouflage treatments such as hair patches, wigs, and Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) techniques
• The last category is hair transplant procedure.
Medical treatment side-effects:
In medical treatments, the usual side effect is noticed in the topical application of minoxidil. “In rare instances, some patients may experience itching, scalp irritation and dryness. This can be avoided by following proper techniques in the application of the topical lotion and keeping the scalp moisturised,” informed Dr John Watts.
Nutritional Supplement Effects:
While taking iron and nutritional supplements like biotin, some patients may experience side effects like constipation and diarrhoea. “Such experience can be avoided by taking adequate diet and water while taking the medication,” informed Dr John Watts.
Finasteride Side-Effect:
Finasteride is another medication that is known to affect a small number of hair patients dealing with genetic baldness. It is known to affect sexual function in a very small percentage of patients. However, Dr John Watts said that some rare instances can be reversed. “Those who notice a such problem can overcome this problem once they stop the medication,” informed Dr John Watts.
Mesotherapy Side-Effect:
Certain mesotherapy procedures too may lead to adverse side effects if one overdoes procedures like micro-needling or dermaroller without maintaining space between two procedures. At least a 20–25 days gap needs to be maintained between the two procedures.
In such procedures, local anaesthesia needs to be administered and those who attempt such procedures without local anaesthesia are like to experience pain. In stem cell procedures, some people may develop allergic reactions if proper precautionary steps are not taken.
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) Side Effects:
SMP is another camouflage technique that uses pigment to create a hair-like illusion on the scalp using micro-tattooing. However, this procedure needs high expertise or else the dots may be messed up and the scalp may look greenish colour due to the use of a faulty technique.
“This procedure is not reversible. Hence, one should be very careful,” advised Dr John Watts.
