In this educational video session, Hyderabad’s noted dermatologist & trichologist and one of the Best Hair Transplant Surgeons in Hyderabad, Dr John Watts answers a specific query on the average time taken for transplanted hair to grow.
Can you pluck them? Will they regrow if you pluck them or will they never grow again in that spot? What is the lifespan of transplanted hair? Why doesn’t the transplanted hair grow immediately? Dr John Watts answers all these queries in this video. So far, he has performed over 2000+ hair transplant surgeries successfully.
Vishnu Vardhan Reddy asks: Sir, I want to know why transplanted hair takes time to grow. Can you pluck the transplanted hair? Will it regrow if you pluck the transplanted hair or is it lost forever? Why transplanted hair does not grow immediately after a hair transplant procedure? What is the lifespan of transplanted hair? Please explain.
After undergoing a hair transplant procedure, it’s common for the transplanted hair to enter a resting phase, causing the empty hair shafts to gradually fall off over the course of 1–2 weeks.
“Within the next 4–5 days following the procedure, the transplanted stem cells begin to assimilate themselves into the scalp, seeking to establish connections with the blood supply,” informed Dr John Watts.
For the transplanted hair to enter the active growth phase, known as the anagen phase, it typically takes around 2–3 months.
While answering the query of Vishnu Vardhan Reddy, Dr Watts clarified that attempting to pluck out the transplanted hair within the first 1–7 days may hinder its regrowth, whereas leaving the hair undisturbed and allowing the empty shafts to naturally shed will pave the way for new hair to grow, which will be permanent.
It’s important to note that transplanted hair initially undergoes an early growth cycle, which means it is expected to fall off around 6–7 months. In contrast, normal hair follows a growth cycle of 2–3 years.
Dr John Watts further explains that after the initial fall-off period, new permanent hair will begin to grow again from the reserved stem cells. “This subsequent hair growth is likely to have a regular growth cycle of 2–3 years, enabling individuals to freely cut, trim, and style their hair as desired,” he explained.
Conclusion: Immediately after a hair transplant, the transplanted hair goes into a resting phase and gradually sheds within 1–2 weeks. Over the next few days, the transplanted stem cells establish connections with the blood supply. Patience is essential, as it takes approximately 2–3 months for the transplanted hair to enter the active growth phase.
Although the initial transplanted hair may fall off after 6–7 months, new hair will grow again from reserved stem cells, following a regular growth cycle of 2–3 years.
