For this week's episode of "Rewine-ing," we wanted to focus on mental health. I think in the Black community, it is not always a comfortable discussion. I know from personal experiences that if you are dealing with depression or a form of mental illness, some think its because you are not praying enough. Some would even go as far and claim you're not spending enough time with God. That if you are depressed, you need to take that to the Lord and pray. I am all for reading my bible, devotion, and the ten commandments. However, I understand that I can have a personal relationship with God and still struggle with my thoughts. Joyce Meyer has a book and teaching series called "Battlefield of the Mind." I have had moments where I had to take time away from people to process what is going on in my life. Many friends see my smile, hear my jokes, and pictures and think I must have it made. Yes, I am blessed, but at times I don't feel like I am. I have my struggles, and when I do feel a mental moment coming, I call a friend or my counselor. I think it is important to have an outlet or someone you can vent too. Depression is something that we have to go through at times alone. I encourage people to try not to stay down and out for long without seeking help. When I feel overwhelmed, I tell my close friends that I'm going to take a "Me" day. If I am still not feeling like myself, I call my counselor.
In the episode, my friend Arturo Hill from "Real Tea Real Talk" joined in on the discussion. He works in the field of Sexual and Mental health. Together we opened up about our experience with mental health and finding the recourses to cope.
This week, I wanted to shine a light, on how Black LGBTQ Youth are not getting the help that they need for mental support. The rate of professional care and resources for Black LGBTQ Youth is at a low rate. Finding Support:https://www.thetrevorproject.org/2020/06/01/supporting-black-lgbtq-youth-mental-health/
