What makes one Latino or Latina? I have been thinking about this after I replied to an Instagram post regarding Gina Rodriguez’s response after she was asked if she needs to speak the language in order to identify or be considered to be Latina. She responded by saying that she is not defined by anyone’s definition of Latina and that she walks in her world confidently.
Just like her, I agree that there isn’t a one size fits all for any demographic. I have lived experiences as a Latina raised in the U.S. and have learned from other individuals who have faced ridicule by other Latinx people who believed they weren’t real enough to identify as part of the Latin American community.
This is the gist of this episode and I share my sentiments on it as well as two stories from people who have been made to feel outcast and/or denied to be fully accepted in their own Latin American community.
Please keep in mind that this is a sensitive topic and while you may not agree with what I have to say, you are expected to be respectful.
Any hateful, mean or bullying comments are not accepted. We can all agree to disagree amicably. Thank you.
