Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. (John 14:27)
A person who was suffering from agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder characterized by symptoms of anxiety when the person is in an open space, public transport or any place outside his home, determined to receive healing into this area. He has agreed to come to the office of the counsellor to face this issue. Though knowing that he would feel safe in the counsellor’s office, his challenge was the journey between his home and the office. He likened his feeling to a trapezist in a circus performance, when he is in between 2 swinging bars, “flying” in the air. Uncertain of his safety.
When we are faced with an unknown future, we tend to search around us, hoping to find some assurance of certainty of safety in others and in the world. But when the whole world is plunged into uncertainty of the future, whom should we turn to? Jesus in His comforting words to His disciples, seemed to suggest that there will be times even the best assurance that the world can give, is insufficient to allay our fears. The peace that we look for cannot be found in others or the world around us. Then, His peace that surpassing all human understanding is what we need. I think that time is now.
Uncertainty about what is on the other side of the current Covid-19 pandemic, perhaps even when we will come through to the other side, is tormenting, worrying at the least. Will life go back to normal the way we knew normalcy?
Most of us know that so long we stay in our homes, we are safe. Those of us who have Jesus in our lives also know that our end is assured - eternal life in our eternal home with our Eternal Father, safe. The challenge is the now, and in between our home on earth and our home in eternity. God knows that we will inevitable face uncertainties and anxieties in life. Therefore, He promised His people, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you.” (Isaiah 43:2)
His peace comes with His presence. During this trying and sometimes confusing time, let us be assured that the peace which Jesus promised is what this world needs. Seek God’s face and His presence in worship, thanksgivings, studying of His words and prayers. This is the one thing needful for us.
