The shepherd psalm (Psalm 23:1-6) is not only a Christian classical, it can be classified as a Christian creed because our relationship and walk with God is actually built on this Psalm. Anyone who seeks to have a fruitful Christian life must know Jesus as his/her shepherd and know himself/herself as the sheep.

----

The relationship between the shepherd and the sheep is such a great one because it reveals to us the relationship between Jesus and the church. This is seen in Jesus called the good shepherd who laid down His life for His sheep.

I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

John 10:11

The sheep do not know how to provide food and water for themselves but, the good shepherd does, so the sheep will not want or lack so long as he follows the shepherd Psalm 23:1-2.

A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

Psalm 23:1-2

The sheep does know how to get a new life and live rightly but, the good shepherd does; so the sheep will live a new and right life so long as it follows the shepherd Psalm 23:3.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Psalm 23:3

Sheep are naturally timid, simple, and fearful creatures but, the good shepherd is wise and fearless, so the sheep will live fearless, peaceful, and comfortable in dangerous times so long as it follows the shepherd Psalm 23:4.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4

The sheep cannot prepare or maintain good pastures for itself but, the good shepherd can; so the sheep will be well fed despite opposition so long as it follows the shepherd Psalm 23:5a.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:

Psalm 23:5a

The sheep cannot prevent flies from troubling its head which is dangerous to it but, the good shepherd can by anointing its head, so long as it follows the shepherd its head is protected from flies Psalm 23:5b.

thou anointest my head with oil; ...Psalm 23:5b

Finally, the sheep cannot make goodness and mercy follow it but, the good shepherd can so long as the sheep follows the shepherd goodness and mercy follows it Psalm 23:6.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Psalm 23:6

_____

If the sheep seeks to enjoy all of these, it must choose to patiently follow the good shepherd even when nothing makes sense to it and it does not understand what the shepherd is doing, because it is meant to follow not to understand.
