I discuss both sides writing songs to celebrate their causes in the war and describe the first bloodshed in Missouri. An examination of images that the two sides created accompanies a lengthy description of the events in the blockbuster hit novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. I seek to answer the question, "What did Billy Yank and Johnny Reb think they were marching off to fight?" In time, as all long wars do, the war would become its own justification.
