If you can keep your wits about you while all others are losing theirs, and blaming you. The world will be yours and everything in it, what's more, you'll be a man, my son.
-Rudyard Kipling
The jungle book it is a beautiful way to illustrate the cultivation of manhood in a young boy. These are a few lessons that reveal themselves to me more explicitly as I watched one of my favorite movies growing up now as an adult. Before I dive into the lessons, it's important to note that the premise of this story is that forces are driving Mowgli toward the village, which represents civilization, and others are pulling him back. The argument being made, in my opinion, is that his journey toward civilization is good.
Lesson 1: the truth can be deceiving
Lesson 2: don't get distracted by hedonism
Lesson 3: tools and the intellect are a gift to mankind
Lesson 4: women are the best way to point a man toward civilization
