Description

Meet Shayla Racquel! I first discovered Shayla through her web series Quarter Century, which depicted the lives of a group of Black friends making their way through love, career, and life overall as post-grads in my resident DC/Maryland/Virginia area. Years later, in 2019, I'd meet her in person at the Pan-African Film Festival showcasing her newest short film, Riverment. The film is a gripping story that follows two generations of Black Civil Rights activists, the opposing yet similar ideologies that come to a head in the wake of police brutality on college campuses.

Shayla and I talk about her roots in theater, what it was like making her first short film, the film festival circuit, and her life as a growing screenwriter and director. I hope you enjoy our conversation on all things movies!
