“We should be too big to take offense and too noble to give it.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

The reason to pay attention to what offends you, is whatever offends you also reveals you.  Carl Jung stated “Everything that irritates us leads us to an understanding of ourselves.” What offends you reveals who you are and what you feel about yourself. Being offended is about your ego. It is the ego that is reacting when you take offense, Today it is so common to take offense. I get it this is a huge problem for me. I take offense and get frustrated just like you. I take things that friends and family members say in the wrong way and get uptight. I know my wife feels there are times when she has to be careful with what she says to me. My youngest son's behaviors often affect my emotions. “If you hate a person you hate something in him that is part of yourself.” stated Hermann Hesse. All these are signs that I am putting someone else in charge of my emotions. That is what taking offense does, it takes us out of the driver's seat and makes the other person in control of our emotions and actions. That has not worked well for me in the past yet I continue to let it happen.
