So For the Marine Corps Birthday today, My story starts with a four hour long bus ride to sunny San Diego. As soon as the bus stopped I started acquiring new skills quickly. I did not need any self-motivation because the motivation offered up by those that got on the bus after arrival. The Drill instructors offered lot’s of motivation. It was sufficient for those that had arrived on the bus. They were yelling, screaming and in our personal space. They were demanding and exact. We almost tripped over each other as we erupted out of the bus. Under the watchful eyes of those welcoming us we were directed to stand on yellow painted footprints on the asphalt. We were told how to stand as we waited. There was energy that was fast moving and washed over me creating excitement and fear.
I was then welcomed to Marine Corps Recruit Depot where I would be for the next three months. We were then formed into lines and marched like cattle into a room to get a haircut. They asked how I would like my hair cut. Then I heard the buzz of the trimmers and felt the cold steel vibrate against the base of my neck and then proceed up my neck and over my head right through the center. Within about 6 more swipes the haircut was finished. I ran my hand over the smooth skin that had not seen the light of day since I was an infant. My red hair had been sucked up by the vacuum hose connected to the trimer and had disappeared as quickly as the trimmers could move through it. It took about three mins. They were yelling and I was up and out of the chair.
The entire time we were in Basic training the Drill Instructors were right there to provide motivation and they did it in a couple different ways. The first one was getting in your face nose to nose. Finger within a hair breath of your eye, yelling like you across a football field stadium from them. The second way was by corporal punishment. Drop and give me 50, or digging sit ups, now pushups, jumping jacks, now burpees. Then round and round we go. But it did create a few different things, one it created memory, most often didn’t happen more than twice often we learned after the first time. It also created strong and resilient people that could act fast and follow orders without question. Both of those things are important in combat situations.
Growth is that 5th basic human need that we talked about in Episode 102 and 103. It will come to us, whether we want it or not. To live an amazing life you must find motivation and choose to grow. I have experienced many times in my life where I was nose to nose with life. I now choose to move myself and not leave it up to life to motivate me.
The Marine Corps creates a brotherhood, Once you claim the title you are forever a Marine! You have brothers and sisters at your side at all times. You know each one is strong and capable and that they will have your back! This is one of the things that I love about being a Marine. It was lots of work. At the time I was not sure I had made the right decision. But I love being a part and I love being together with my brothers and Sisters. So today is the birthday of the Marine Corps! Ooohh Rah
