Have you ever gotten out of a good habit you were in and found it difficult to get back into it. I have had a problem with this and others around me seem to suffer with the same thing. Because I had allowed life to get in the way and stop me from doing some things I lost the momentum. Trying to get started again I experienced an emotional block. Part of this block came as other things that were screaming for me to do them first. There are times when I schedule time to complete my goal. But sometimes I allow myself to get distracted. I started running off onto another job that was easier to complete. Like cleaning off my desk, answering emails, anything other than completing my goal. For some people they will do anything but make a call. It might be for work or service or even family. But some people struggle to get on the phone. They will do anything but the thing they want to accomplish. It can be so hard to get started.

Last Friday I was talking to my son Wesley. Wes is going to the U of U and he had a paper due. He had it about 2/3rds of the way completed and was coming up with every reason not to finish it. He talked about asking his instructor for an extension. He didn’t feel the juices going and didn’t want to work on it. We talked about it and told him just to get started writing anything. Once the paper was in front of him and he was typing thoughts would begin to come. He called about an hour later and was fully engrossed and in a creative process and nearly done with the paper just wanted some perspective on the final draft. The thing was he had to be uncomfortable for a bit and start even though he wasn’t in the mood or even want to work on it.

This is very common and can happen even when we have set up great habits. We can get side tracked and not be in the mood. Or forget and after a couple of times the momentum we had built up to keep us going subsides. Then it can feel difficult to get going again. So when we lose the momentum and get out of practice. It can feel very difficult to get it going again. So how do we get started again? The longer we keep from starting does it get easier or harder to get back to? Will the distraction decrease? NO.

The difference is to start. Once you start the distractions will pass and the juices will start flowing and you will start to feel the momentum. When I sit down with the tools in front of me and start to think and work on what I want the distractions diminish. I start to get more momentum and the flow returns. Once I take the first step the rest falls into place. Truthfully Most people look at these big chunks of work that they figure it will take to get what they want. But really it only takes 20 Seconds to change your life, you only need to be brave for 20 seconds and to start. Like with my son He did not have to spend the whole hour and a half he was working on his paper being strong. After he started the words started flowing and then it was not hard to do he just continued on. It took very little energy at that time to keep going. He only had to put in the increased energy to get started. He had to be brave just long enough for the flow to start.

I’m betting you have something you want to do and yet it is hard to get started. The thing to do is just to start, take that first step. When you take the first step it puts a Natural Law into effect on your behalf. After that first step you have the law of inertia “things in motion tend to stay in motion” behind you pushing you on to greatness.
