Habeeb Ali, executive director of One Love Family Services and One Love Media. He has created community initiatives to help meet peoples needs especially during the pandemic. Habeeb is an interfaith chaplain, who was born and raised in Guyana. He grew up in an interfaith family with Hindu and Muslim parents and was a Bob Marley fan and even became a Rastafarian briefly, for a few years as a youth. His diverse background and passion for bringing people together would serve him later in life. He studied at Queens College in Guyana, then gained the opportunity to study a Masters in Islamic studies in India. Afterwards he immigrated to Canada and has been working as a Muslim chaplain over the past 17 years.
Ali was inspired to create the One Love gala, 10 years ago, during his tenure as a chaplain for the Federal institution when Stephen Harper removed all non-Christian chaplains. So Ali wanted to award and acknowledge the successful integration of chaplains, including minority chaplains like Jewish, Muslim and Rastafarian, who were former inmates into society. Ali also works with other community activists who try to encourage inmates to stay out of crime through sharing their testimonies and even to encourage youth to not pursue a life of crime.
Besides the gala, Ali also helped to co-found the One Love Family Services non profit organization. Their goal is to to provide food hampers that are culturally appropriate to families in need through curb side pickup and through volunteers delivering to clients across the GTA. One Love Family services even does family wellness checks especially during the pandemic.
One Love Family also has a food drive which is sponsored by partners in churches, mosques, international students, seniors, single mothers, people from Vaughn, Markham, Whitby, Christian, Jewish, Atheist, Hindu have all participated and used their food drive through this difficult time. Ali was even inspired by one of the families that was helped through the drive as they are now successfully back on their feet and able to donate to the food drive to pay it forward.
