You may think that you are burning a TON of calories in the gym during your 1 hour training sessions…
The truth is, you’re not.
Lemme break down for you how your body actually burns calories:
-BMR (Amount of calories burned at rest): 60%
-NEAT (Activity outside of the gym/exercise): 20%
-TEF (Calories burned through ingesting meals): 10%
-EAT (Calories burned through exercise): 10%
Keep in mind, our BMR is actually something we have very little control over, and will actually increase as we build more muscle through strength training on a regular basis and giving our body enough calories.
This may take several years of dieting, maintaining, and building with good programming (hence why I am such an advocate for coaching).
This process can get oversimplified, and you actually don’t have much control over your BMR, which is where 80% of your calories are burned.
So let’s focus on what you CAN control…your NEAT, where 20% of your calories are burned.
NEAT is an acronym for non-exercise activity thermogenesis. This is a big fancy word for your basic day-to-day activities—walking, doing laundry, shopping, picking up your kids, dancing, etc…It can be really easy to burn an extra 100-200 calories a day just from being more active.
Here’s a couple ways to increase your NEAT:
* Park in the back of the store.
* Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
* Get a standing desk.
* 10 minute walk break from work.
* Walk to the store instead of driving
* Pace while you chat on the phone
* Fidget>Standing still
You remember that fidgety kid in math class that couldn’t sit still? I guarantee you he was skinny.
The reason for that was he was burning a SHIT TON of calories just being a fidgety squirrel kid.
Part of someone’s propensity for higher NEAT is actually genetic, but if your purposefully track your steps, you will force yourself to burn more calories outside of the gym, which is where it counts…not the 1 hour that you spend on the treadmill everyday.
