Many of you Hillsiders are new, just starting your life in the church (for which every legacy Hillsider is beyond happy!). Compared to quite a few of our Hillside brothers and sisters who measure their involvement in the church in decades, I (Dan) am a newbie like you, having just been at Hillside for 29 months. I remember at first how odd it was to get to the Hillside campus from Olympic Blvd. (maybe you can relate!). I couldn't believe the only way up to the church campus was through downtown. I also remember the drive home after moving into my office at Hillside. I was surprised when Google Maps told me to turn left at Newell after punching in my Pleasant Hill address. I barked at the phone: "That can’t be right. I've got to get back to the freeway. That’s how I got here.” Well, after a few weeks and a few unnecessary miles, I realized that Google Maps was right. The shortest route home was not the same as the shortest route to church. That's a picture of John's "driving directions" to the peaceful "land" of judgment day assurance. They're not what we expect, but they get us to our destination. If you're back home after your trip to Yellowstone or Yosemite, I hope you'll join us in person on the hill at either 9:00 or 11:00 AM. That's right, we're back to two services! I also hope you'll invite a friend. Can't wait to see you.
