The chief reason that we serve our neighbors in this life is to love them as God has loved us. As we love them, we will want to share the Ultimate Love with them as well - Jesus. We must always be praying for, and seeking the good of our neighbors, so that ultimately God might open a door to share the hope of eternal life that we have in Christ Jesus.
