Description

Hey guys, we wanted to build off of our Indian Matchmaking series and talk more about South Asian representation. So, this week we’re talking about South Asian representation in Western media, specifically in the shows “The Mindy Project” and “New Girl” (mostly because Rukky has seen a total of ten (10) shows in her entire life). We delve into the strengths and weaknesses of South Asian representation in the two shows. We cover topics of colorism, stigmas in Western media, white saviours, and how ethnicity/culture is sometimes used as a convenient tool to further plot points and then completely disregarded. We also talk a bit about how immigration, racial hierarchies, and the model minority myth all contribute to stigmas/the perception of South Asians and how that is reflected in the roles they are given. Something that we talk about in the episode and want to hear your opinion on is whether South Asian directors/producers should bear the responsibility of accurately representing South Asians through characters that centre around the culture?
