If you want to be successful in business, you’ve got to get good at selling
Selling is not talking people into buying things they don’t want or need
It’s uncovering the value of what you have to offer so well that people are happy to exchange the money in their pocket for the value you reveal
The problem is when we think about uncovering the value to people, we think about uncovering what’s valuable to US about our “thing”
That’s not the same as uncovering the value to the people. We have to uncover what’s valuable TO that someone.
In order to do this:
- Ask questions and wait for their answers
- Pay attention to what people are complaining about
They’ll only pay you to solve their problems, not the problems that you want to solve
The reason some people have to try to CONVINCE someone to buy is because they didn’t do a good job PERSUADING them
- CONVINCING: trying to get you to do something (buy) for my reasons
- PERSUASION: helping people make a decision that they already desire to make for their OWN REASONS
If you want to get good at sales you have to listen and allow the person you are selling to provide the CONTENT and you provide the CONTEXT
- CONTENT: The solution they seek
- CONTEXT: The frame you put around it. What you cause them to focus on that helps them to understand how your product/service will help them to get to their desired destination
