Quantity vs Quality
Jerry Uelsmann, a professor University of Florida – Film Photography
Divided his students into two groups
1. Quantity Group – graded only on the amount of work they produced
- 100 photos = A, 90 photos = B, 80 photos = C, and so on.
2. Quality Group- graded only on the excellence of their work
- Produce only one photo during the semester, but to get an A, it had to be nearly perfect
At the end of the semester:
- Quantity Group – These students took many photos experimenting and testing different techniques and methods, and learning from their mistakes.
i. In the process they developed their skills
- Quality Group – spent their time speculating about perfection and ended with little to show for it
Voltair said, “The best is the enemy of the good”
It’s easy to get bogged down trying to figure out the best way to do something and never actually starting
In Atomic Habits (https://amzn.to/3N7lrvv) James Clear says it well, “put in your reps”
- You can’t always control your goals, but you can control your actions (the reps) that will help you to achieve your goal
- Have a growth mindset – learn from mistakes
- Build your success habits
- Become the person who can do the thing (i.e. the goal)
