In America, democracy is seen as the bedrock of our nation. It girds the very foundation of our constitution: to have elected leaders, not monarchical kings or queens. We accept the results of fair elections and we uphold the peaceful transition of power. But what if we didn’t? What if we attempted to violently replace leaders we didn’t like? But, of course, we saw this actually attempted from white supremacists on January 6th, 2021 who stormed the U.S Capitol. Imagine what would have happened if they had succeeded?
Unfortunately, the descendants of those who live in Wilmington, North Carolina don’t have to imagine. Because in 1898, white supremacists did violently attempt a coup to take down their city’s government; simply for electing black politicians to office. And, they succeeded. Do You Know: The Wilmington Coup of 1898.
