EPISODE OVERVIEW
The events that occurred in the Greenwood District of Tulsa (Black Wall Street) on May 31-June 1 1921 are often referred to as a riot, but it was also a massacre.
Riot - Wild or violent disorder, confusion, or disturbance; tumult; uproar.
Massacre - an indiscriminate and brutal slaughter of people.
Members of the KKK and other white supremacists used the false claim of sexual assault against a 17yo white woman by a 19yo black man to insight the riot. At its peak, more than 15,000 whites (as young as 10yo), armed with more than $500,000 worth of guns and ammo had amassed to destroy Tulsa’s African-American community. Also, a Tulsa police officer at the time, Van B Hurley says planes were used to drop nitroglycerin and kerosene bombs.
After instigating the riot with headlines like, "Nab That Negro For Attacking Girl In Elevator", the Tulsa Tribune continued to use its media platform to spread hate with the post-riot/massacre front-page headline, "Little Africa On Fire."
