Welcome to another Author's Tuesday interview with another great children's author Andrea Olatunhi.
Award-winning author and seasoned educator Andrea Olatunji lives by her mission to validate and instill an appreciation for diversity in young children. She developed a passion for languages and cultures early on in her twenty-year-plus career. She has taught English as a Second Language and Spanish in her native Uruguay and here in the United States, gaining valuable expertise with diversity and multicultural environments.
Her children’s book series, Nuestra Fauna, is a fantastic resource to learn Spanish in a contextualized and fun way. The series features Latin American fauna while teaching important values.
Her first book, “Omar, el jaguar” is the recipient of the Moonbeam Spirit Award in the category of Preservation. It has been named an award-winning finalist in the Children’s Educational Category of the 2020 International Book Awards and lately, it won the Cover Design Award by KidsShelfBooks. The story celebrates diversity while raising awareness about climate change.
Her second book “Guillo, el armadillo” is a tribute to her own students. Based in a project she used in her classroom, this story inspires kids to discover her unique talents. This book received an honorary mention in the International Latino Book Awards for best Educational Picture Book.
Being an educator, Andrea couldn’t help but create educator guides for these books including lesson plans, guiding questions, project ideas, and assessments.

Ganadora de varios premios dentro de la literatura infantil, Andrea Olatunji tiene como misión principal validar a los niños e inculcar en ellos una apreciación por la diversidad. Oriunda de Uruguay, Andrea ha desarrollado una gran pasión por los idiomas y sus culturas. Ha enseñado el inglés como segunda lengua y el español, aquí en los Estados Unidos y en su país natal, Uruguay. Esto le ha otorgado una experiencia muy valiosa en el campo de la diversidad y el multiculturalismo.
Su serie, Nuestra Fauna, la cual destaca fauna latinoamericana, es un recurso muy valioso para aprender el español de una forma contextualizada y divertida. En ésta se discuten temas como la diversidad, el medio ambiente, y la autoestima.
Su primer libro, “Omar, el jaguar”, ha sido galardonado con el premio Moonbeam Spirt Award en la categoría de Conservación y también ha sido seleccionado finalista en los premios internacionales del libro (International Book Awards) en la categoría libros educativos para niños y últimamente ganó el premio Mejor Diseño de Portada (KidsShelfBooks Cover Design Award) otorgado por KidsSheflBooks.
