A native of Georgia (born in Germany!), Angelica Swaim found her way to the Bay Area after spending seven years in the Navy falling in love with the sport of running while training on ships and racing on land. Angelica is a member of the Oiselle Volée and now runs everything from 5ks to 50ks!
In this episode, we discuss Angelica’s identity as a runner both when she was in the Navy and now in the Medical Device industry, why she makes her way to the front of the start-line at trail races, and how she tackles new distances and why she prefers the longer distances. We also talk about what it’s like to often be the only Black female runner at trail races and why representation is so important.
Some highlights from our conversation:
- Her experience in the Navy and running on ships out at sea
- Finding community in the Oiselle Volée
- Winning Skyline to the Sea 50k last year
- How cancelled races has shifted her training
- How she sees her role as a Black female runner
- How running different distances can help reframe your running goals
- How she inspires her co-workers (and her husband) by getting out the door to run each day
