When it comes to colonizing, conquering, and the likes, the stories we talk about most often are focused on national governments and religious entities. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) is one of the interesting exceptions to their pattern. Equipped with military units, ships, servants, and weaponry, VOC built a gradual monopoly and ownership over Indonesian spice production from 1603 to 1799.
