Only 20% of small businesses for sale ever find a buyer. It’s a grim statistic. That means 80% of business owners interested in selling turn around and lock the door as they have always, done for years. But one last time, it will be for good and they will never be back. Years of hard work taking on the stress of payroll, bank loans, and business red tape is a tough grind that employees don’t understand. But the owner moves forward with the ambition and optimism that it will all be worth it when the business is sold and their retirement is fully funded. Yet, when that day doesn’t come, it can be devastating to a business owner left questioning if they made the right decisions.

Fortunately, some business owners get it right and can sell their business successfully. This doesn't happen by accident, it generally takes 3+ years of planning and preparation to ensure a business is sellable. Gene Sower sold his company Samson Media and stayed on to continue running the business for the new owners. I'll be talking with him about How and Why Selling His Business Was the Best Thing he Ever Did.

Gene Sower is the founder of the digital marketing agency Samson Media which he started in 2006. Gene sold the agency after 15 years and now works as a new business development consultant for the new owners based in Maryland.

In addition to working for Samson Media, Gene has started another consulting business named Fleur De Lis Consulting aimed at educating and assisting other digital agency owners who are interested in selling their business.

Before founding Samson Media, Gene spent 20 years in the corporate video public relations industry in New York where he wrote and produced various forms of broadcast video communications projects for Fortune 500 companies. Gene is a long-time resident of Montclair, NJ, and a graduate of Montclair State University.
