Abstinence programs are useless
Are federally-funded abstinence programs effective as a way of getting kids to delay sex in order to prevent disease and pregnancy? Absolutely not. Saving yourself for marriage is an outdated notion as far as our general culture is concerned. Many teens are engaging earlier and getting married later. The focus needs to be on education. Teaching about the reality and consequences of being active early, having multiple partners, getting a disease, and contraception are far more effective than the “just say no” approach. Two billion dollars have been wasted on sex education, but kids aren’t being given the information they need in order to guide their behavior. An incomplete education leaves kids to figure it out for themselves, putting them at risk for potentially life-altering outcomes. Parents, take charge. Teach your kids what they need to know to protect their futures.
