Prepping your baby for the 5th grade

Want your child to be a successful student in the 5th grade?  It all starts in the cradle.  The three most important factors to academics are the child’s participation in learning activities, access to educational materials and the quality of their parents’ interactions with them.  Parents who are diligent about storytelling and casual conversation set those positive habits in place and they stick, for at least 10 years, long enough to get them through the 5th grade.  What we’re talking about here is language development and building the fundamental blocks of reading.  Both of these require listening and reasoning skills, as well as attention.  This very early learning environment sets your child up for success.  It’s especially important for those children from low income settings who have fewer chances to succeed.  Learning skills don’t develop overnight.
