More pregnant women using pot for morning sickness
About 10% of pregnant women are smoking pot to ease morning sickness and anxiety associated with pregnancy. This is likely an underestimation because mothers-to-be don’t want to admit to smoking pot. Research is ongoing about its potential effects on the developing fetus. There’s no positive news here. Women who smoke pot while pregnant are giving birth to babies who are underweight resulting in future diagnoses of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and a wide variety of problems such as learning disabilities. These children also end up with social, emotional and behavioral problems. Decriminalization of pot and the fact that it’s being used to treat nausea and chronic pain associated with chemotherapy has convinced women that it’s safe to use for pregnancy-related stress and discomfort. It’s not safe. Talk with your doctor about alternatives for treatment.
