Topic - Babies & Their Senses. Babies’ motor skills aren’t well-developed, but they offset their weaknesses with strengths in sensory skills.
Newborns have limited visual acuity that rapidly improves in a few days to see shapes clearly. They prefer faces and at one month can tell Mom’s face from others.
At 2-3 months, they see color and at 6 months, their depth perception and visual acuity is close to that of an adult.
In terms of hearing, during the final months in the womb, they can hear sounds and a newborn’s hearing is only a bit less sensitive than an adult’s. Within days of birth, they prefer human voices over noise, and can recognize Momma’s voice!
They have all 4 tastes, but prefer sweet! Infants respond to nasty odors the first days of life and can discriminate between 2 odors just days after birth.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking your baby isn’t paying attention. She’s using all of her senses to take it in.
