What to do?
I recommend that kids volunteer their time doing basic tasks at a job that looks interesting to them. It’s a great way to explore the reality of jobs by observing the workers and the work underway.
Insurance guidelines may not allow them to work at certain jobs, so help them to narrow down realistic positions. As you travel about your day, make notes of businesses that might be open to free labor.
Even if they work there for a month, they can get a statement of their performance.
This approach allows them to “get up, dress up and show up” in a low-risk setting. If they have to interview, all the better. It will help them to get familiar with the dynamics of a job interview.
By the time they seek out a paying job, they’ll know what to expect and they’ll be more prepared to put their best foot forward.
