Topic - Testing for ADHD. Parents think James has Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, so I interview them and outline the assessment process.
I conduct two observations at school. Since James doesn’t know me, these observations are “blind” and are at least 30 minutes each.
I write up the observations and meet with parents to review the findings and determine the next step.
If I think James has ADHD, parents complete an extensive developmental history and rating scales measuring ADHD and executive functioning behaviors.
They also provide information about emotional and social functioning. Teachers complete rating scales and a feedback form where they give narrative information about James.
I interview him in my office and ask questions about his perception of ADHD behaviors.
It’s a thorough process and the results can be trusted. Treating ADHD may require medication, so make sure the diagnosis is correct.
