Topic - Blood Flow In Autistic Brains
More is being learned about the differences between autistic and typically-developing brains. We now know that there’s too much blood flowing through the front parts of an autistic brain. This creates problems in understanding and managing social interactions. It also causes delays in the brain’s development resulting in the social-emotional deficits seen in persons with autism. These special blood flow tests reveal the amount of energy that the brain is using. Those with autism have fewer long-range connections between distant parts of the brain. This interferes with information flow and results in problems with social responsiveness. Scientists are on their way to developing medications, treatments and therapies to reduce the devastating effects of autism. We just can’t wait for that day to come!
