Topic - Is your child at risk for cutting?

People cut, burn or mutilate themselves without intent to commit suicide.  They do it because they’re emotionally overwhelmed.

Two million Americans, mostly teens, hurt themselves in this way.

Look for signs such as bloody towels, stashes of razors, unexplained cuts and bruises and wearing clothes too warm for the season.

Your first response should be empathy.

Take it seriously.  Cutting may eventually lead to suicide.

Avoid focusing on injuries; instead focus on the reasons behind the anxiety.

Don’t make threats.  Show love and concern, assure confidentiality.

Although kids may use the internet to share their cuts and burns, self-injury isn’t contagious.  Healthy kids won’t hurt themselves, but kids who feel alienated find other kids who feel the same way.

Don’t wait to get help.

Get referrals for several clinicians who specialize in this issue.  Interview two or more before introducing your child to them.
