Topic - Baby’s Birdsong.  Babies transition from simple to complex babbling in a process that’s far more complicated than previously thought.  The process parallels songbirds learning new melodies.  The challenge in learning language isn’t in mastering new sounds, but in making the transition from one sound to another.  The transitions must be learned individually.  Just because Sam can say mah-mu doesn’t mean he can say mu-mah.  These first steps in learning language sounds require intensive work; once mastered, meaningful language emerges quickly.  Engage your child, face-to-face in conversational speech, no matter how young they are.  Teach them the prosody or rhythm of language and conversation.  Show them how it looks to have a conversation and reward their attempts to participate.  Language is the core of education and human interaction.  Don’t leave it to chance.
