Topic - The Brain’s Odometer and Stopwatch.
The brain is amazing. It senses time and distance even when you’re not directly thinking about it.
Specialized neurons called grid cells are responsible for navigating both time and space despite having no visual landmarks.
You can’t escape space and time; they’re involved in every aspect of our lives so the brain has developed ways to track these dimensions.
Circuits that organize space and time gave rise to memory which is a common skill in mammals.
How do elephants, whales, and other animals return to the same places to give birth, feed or die?
Why do some people have a keen sense of direction or no sense of time?
How is it that I can walk into the kitchen just as the timer is ready to go off, but I get lost so easily?
Clearly, my “timing” grid cells work great and the “location” grid cells, not so much. Glad, I’ve got technology to help me!
