Topic - Dangerism.
We’re getting to be a bunch of scaredy-cat parents.
Parents have been arrested because their children played in the yard after dark and for letting them to walk to school alone.
Parents now have a name, free-range parenting, for what we used to call “going out to play”. Good grief.
Now, there’s dangerism, a term coined by Gever Tulley, who created the Tinkering School, to point out the trend toward labeling common childhood behaviors as dangerous.
He says that we’re worrying about all the wrong things which make us fearful most of the time.
Clearly, it’s unhealthy. And, because of this, we’re instilling fear in our kids and limiting their chances to explore and learn.
We’re not allowing them to develop coping skills, competence and to learn self-reliance and resilience.
Common sense seems to be a thing of the past and we need to return to using sound judgment based on science, statistics and concrete evidence.
