Topic - They Never Sign It

From time-to-time, I had parents in my practice who were resistant to hearing the seriousness of their children’s disabilities and poo-poo’d the recommendations.

“Oh, he’ll just outgrow it”, they’d say or “She just needs more time”.

People don’t outgrow autism, language processing disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder or dyslexia.

In fact, the symptoms of these disabilities can and will significantly worsen in light of the increasing demands of the coming years.

ADHD has its own potential dangers because it can turn into oppositional and defiant behavior and criminal conduct.

When parents were resistant, I prepared a document listing my findings and support plan.

At the end, I wrote a statement about them taking full responsibility for the outcome if my recommendations weren’t followed.  It was never signed.  They always came to their senses.
