When it comes to children on the autistic spectrum, language processing disorders get the majority of focus when it comes to school-based and private therapies.
But, there’s evidence that visual perceptual problems cause serious distress in their lives.
Hypersensitivity such as focusing on tiny pieces of dust, bright lights and looking down are common.
Hyposensitivity behaviors include being attracted to light, looking intensely at objects or people, moving fingers or objects in front of their eyes, fascination with reflections or bright color and running their hands around the edges of objects.
Other problems include slow speed of taking in information in their visual field and integrating it into one big picture. Visual cognitive therapy may help.
