Topic - Pets and Kids.  Exposure to two or more dogs or cats the first year of life may reduce allergies during childhood. You might get a pet because it’s time for Adam to have one, but you know that the care of this animal will ultimately fall on you, Mom and Dad.

Safety is always the first concern.  Other realities such as budget, labor-intensiveness of care and Adam’s personal capabilities factor into the final decision.

What are Adam’s emotional needs?  Does he want a pet to cuddle or just observe?  If he needs a cuddly friend, he can start with a cage animal like a guinea pig.

If Adam shows good judgment and responsibility over time, a dog or cat might be next.  If you decide on a dog, research the breeds that fit best with the family’s personality.

Consider an older dog that has been fostered by a rescue group.  They’ll know a lot about its personality and can help you with a match.  Getting a 2-3 year old dog eliminates all of that puppy stuff.  Oh, this is gonna be fun.
