For decades, there’s been conflicting evidence about the male-female brain difference issue. The largest brain-imaging study of its kind found gender-specific patterns, but overall more similarities than differences. Male brains are heavier than ours. Despite being heavier, it’s women who have a thicker cerebral cortex. That’s the wrinkly outer layer of the brain that’s important in language, memory, perception, consciousness plus other functions. Someone with a thick cortex earns higher scores on tests of general intelligence and other thinking skills. Men had larger areas for memory and spatial awareness, emotions and decision-making, learning, reward processing, and relaying sensory information to other parts of the brain. Men’s brains, overall, vary much more from one to the next than do women’s. I guess there are differences after all!
