Topic - Language Arts Matter.  Have you ever attended one of those school meetings where you’re told, “It’s OK that Madison’s having trouble with reading and writing. She’ll do OK in science and social studies because there are projects in there.  She’ll do OK in PE and her elective”.

The trouble is that every single lesson in school is a language arts lesson.  There’s homework in PE nowadays.  There are science books and social studies books to be read.  What part of this concept is missing from the discussion?

There are labs to write up in science and writing is required for social studies projects.  So, if your child has an individualized education plan, an IEP, make it a point to have goals and objectives written for any subject where reading and writing are involved.

Even if your child doesn’t have an IEP and struggles with reading and writing, don’t expect them to turn in super grades just because the class is not English.  The requirements in school may not be as you remember them.  Today, it’s all about reading and writing.
