Topic - Am I A Boy Or A Girl?
There were many times in my practice when I answered the phone and a parent said, “Can I ask you a question?” Sometimes, parents would come in to chat about their concerns. A dad asked me if his young son was gay because he played with girls. As it turns out, the boy was brilliant and his language skills were more consistent with girls and he just didn’t enjoy the physical play of boys. These days, parents are concerned about transgender issues. My advice? Listen to your gut and follow your kid’s lead. If she exhibits mostly male behaviors and interests, let her go. Give her every opportunity to do what she wants. If she’s stressed over it, see a therapist. If she wants to undergo surgery, wait until she’s had a chance to experience life and is sure of her decision. The suicide rate among transgender persons is shockingly high. Our culture now embraces this personal choice, but she needs to be certain that it’s her choice and not media influence.
