Topic - Bipolar disorder and intelligence
It’s really great to be intelligent, but high IQs can come with risks.
Research has made the connection between high IQs in childhood to
increased chances of bipolar disorder in adulthood. The risk is even
higher for those children with the strongest verbal intelligence.
Previously, science has proven the link between “creativity” and the risk of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. There’s also an association between autism-related genes and higher intelligence. It’s all connected. Nature selects traits in such a way to enhance the survival of the species. As we humans have evolved, it’s likely some traits “rode” along with others because they served us in ways that are no longer necessary. In today’s society and education, language, social and attentional skills are critical to survival and success. Nature needs more time to catch up with
our rapidly changing culture.
